Located in the heart of the Northcenter/St. Ben’s neighborhood, the Bell & Howell Lofts was developed in 1995 and was among the first of what was to be many conversions in Chicago of former industrial space into residential lofts. The original three story timber manufacturing building of the Bell & Howell Company, connected to two later four and six story concrete additions, were developed into 57 units. All of the units boast the original tall ceilings and open layouts and many have breathtaking views of Chicago’s skyline. In 2006, the building’s signature nine story ceramic clock tower was restored and is still today among the tallest structures on the northwest side of Chicago.
The lofts are located on Ravenswood Avenue, along with many other former manufacturing facilities which have found new life as offices, theaters, exercise facilities and artist’s studios. Each October, the Ravenswood Art Walk showcases artists located in the Ravenswood corridor who open their doors to visitors from around the city.
There are also many vibrant shops on nearby Lincoln Avenue and Irving Park Road including restaurants, theaters and antique shops and the area boasts many public transportation options.
